FLORIDA SOCIETY OF NEWSPAPER EDITORS
2008 NEWSPAPER COMPETITION
(For work published in 2007)
DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR PHOTO AND DESIGN CATEGORIES:
General:
Entries must be submitted on disk; CD or DVD is acceptable. Photos and Design may be submitted on separate disks, but not more than two disks per paper (1 for photos, 1 for design).
Each disk should contain folders named “Photos” and “Design.”
Inside the Design folder, create 4 folders, one for each category. Include the category number in the folder name:
- 13. Front Page
- 14. News (non-1A such as Business, Local, Inside A)
- 15. Features
- 16. Sports
Inside the Photo folder, create 4 folders, one for each category. Include the category number in the folder name:
- 19. Spots News
- 20. Features
- 21. Sports
- 22. Photo Story
File format: Upload .JPGs only; no PDFs. Files must be scanned to 200 dpi or ppi. Horizontal images should be 10 inches wide by depth; vertical images should be 10 inches deep by width. Pages submitted in the design categories must be 10-12 inches wide by depth at 72 dpi or ppi.
File names: Naming the files correctly is critical. If files are misnamed, the judges will not see them.
Use a code showing the contest division, category, a code letter for the paper and a number to show how many entries are included.
For categories that allow multiple images in each entry, add a letter.
PHOTO ENTRY EXAMPLES:
Examples:
- A19-A-1.jpg = Division A, category 19, paper A, entry #1.
- B22-D-2a.jpg = Division B, category 22, paper D, first photo in entry #2.
- B22-D-2b.jpg = same as above, but second photo in entry #2. (use “c, d, etc.” for multiple images of the entry.
Additional notes:
Captions may be included in the PhotoShop field before uploading. The caption MUST NOT identify the newspaper or the photographer.
The Photo Story category may be the work of a single photographer or a staff entry.
All entries received by deadline will be copied from the disk to a commercial file-sharing server for judging. Again, it’s critical that files be named properly to assure that the judges see all entries in that category.
The addition of “2a, 2B, etc.” in the Photo Story category will permit judges to view the photos in the order you want.
List of code letters for each paper is below.
The staffers, or staffers, must be named on the entry form. Do not identify the designer(s) on the entry file.
If you have question about submitting pages, please email John Bartosek: john_bartosek@pbpost.com
