Local Government Reporter

Posted 2/16/2013

Description: The Tampa Bay Times is seeking an aggressive, energetic reporter to cover the city government and city life of Clearwater, Florida. Clearwater is the county seat and Pinellas County’s second largest city, and it provides rich opportunities for good journalism. The job involves coverage of the business of city government, following city politics and holding officials accountable. But this reporter will not spend all of his or her time in City Hall. Clearwater is a diverse and interesting community, and we want a reporter who will explore the breadth and depth of it, including neighborhood associations, minority communities and local business leaders. This reporter also will be expected to deliver enterprise work and investigative projects that can contend for 1B and 1A.

The work schedule is generally 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with regular night meetings. The Clearwater reporter, like other reporters in the Clearwater bureau, also participates in a rotation that involves covering day cops in St. Petersburg on Sundays every five or six weeks.

Requirements: At least three years professional experience and an interest in and appreciation of government accountability reporting. Also required: Curiosity, accuracy, ability to multitask, good writing on deadline, and the desire to be part of a dedicated, hard-working team in the Clearwater bureau.

Contact Assistant Metro Editor Roy LeBlanc at rleblanc@tampabay.com. Email inquiries only please.

Reporter

The Villages Daily Sun, America’s fastest growing daily newspaper, is expanding its staff and seeking reporters with a proven passion for community journalism.

We’ve created positions at both the senior and entry-level reporting stage. Successful candidates should be comfortable handling a variety of assignments that center largely around human interest features. Special consideration will be given to those with experience covering health and medical issues, consumer news, municipal governments or Florida politics. The newspaper is part of a media group that also operates a cable TV station and a radio station – platforms to which our reporters regularly contribute.

The Daily Sun believes in the future of print and is defying national trends of declining circulation numbers and downsizing staff. We cater to a senior population, but also cover the story of explosive growth in several surrounding counties. We’re a 90-mile drive to the beach, the theme parks and the historic neighborhoods of Gainesville and St. Augustine. We offer competitive pay, excellent benefits and access to a highly regarded school system in one of the state’s most idyllic settings.

Applicants should have a college degree and newsgathering experience, as well as reliable transportation. In addition to a firm grasp of the fundamentals and AP style, an experimental mindset is a must. Florida residents familiar with the area are a plus.

Apply by sending your resume, references and four to six writing clips that clearly illustrate your reporting abilities to the attention of Managing Editor Matthew Fry at matthew.fry@thevillagesmedia.com.

Due to the typically high volume of applications we normally receive, we’ll be unable to keep individual candidates constantly updated on our hiring process or conduct preliminary interviews at the applicant’s request.
