Letter: Above-the-law attitude characteristic of Port St. Lucie regime

Leadership. It’s what Port St. Lucie desperately needs and has yet to find. With the changes in the upper management over the past few years — city manager, mayor and police chief — one would have thought that residents would have realized a change in the way things are done at City Hall.

Recent events are a clear indication of business as usual in a two-tiered level of governing — those with connections and then the rest of us.

Real leaders lead from the front. They lead in the public eye and don’t hide behind public information officers or communication directors. For them, the truth is a perfect defense, and they accept responsibility for mistakes and take/give credit where credit is due.

City Manager Jerry Bentrott, Mayor JoAnn Faiella and Police Chief Reuther clearly lack the leadership that the residents of this city deserve.

Why are they so afraid of the public eye? Do they have something to hide? Are they not proud of what they have done or are supposed to be doing for us?

They don’t want to answer the tough questions, yet we were promised transparency in the last election. Where is it?

The residents of this city need to hold these city officials accountable for their conduct or lack thereof.

Our city clearly has two sets of rules as evidenced by recent conduct of Assistant City Attorney Gaby Taylor. What the TCPalm article about Taylor failed to articulate, among other things, was her alleged ranting at the police officer to with “Do you know who I am?” and words to that effect.

Those words clearly indicate her perception that she, like others, is above the law — a common mindset among the upper crust at City Hall. Her bosses have done nothing to negate this. It’s time to flush the toilet.
