Letter: Term limits best way to deal with unaccountable Florida lawmakers

Thanks to Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart, for his efforts to bring insurance payments by elected offices more in line with what the real world has to fork over.

What angers me, beside his bill being voted down, is that the vote was taken by a “show of hands,” not by roll call.

Ergo, we have no way to know who voted against the proposal, meaning that we cannot hold these people accountable for their actions. In my opinion, this is just plain cowardice, as they do not want to face their constituents.

Because some of these people get way too comfortable and begin to consider an elected office a permanent job, perhaps we should now look into term limits.

For those officials who claim that being in politics is sometimes a hardship because of “all the expensive events they have to attend,” I say if it’s such a hardship, don’t run again. Get out of politics altogether.

Get job in the private sector and try to pay all your monthly obligations, plus inflated insurance premiums like the rest of us. Oh, and one more thing: We can’t vote ourselves cost-of-living increases, either. Just so you know.
